Money and Power have a huge affect when it comes to gentrification in the Mission district. It is obvious that those from the community don’t have any power for they are the ones being forced out and can’t afford the new pricing. Those moving in or bringing new businesses into the Mission are the ones who have enough money, usually from top tech corporations or people of high socio economic.
First lets start with some economic statistics in San Francisco and then specifically talk about the Mission district. SPUR states that in 2014, the average house value in San Francisco was close to 1 million and it has been predicted that prices will continue to increase after 2015. Only 14% of San Franciscans can afford the median price of homes in the city. San Francisco Business Times placed statistics on the highest rents in the country, and has San Francisco as number 2 with $3,488. They were talking about a San Francisco native who no longer wants to live there nor can she afford to live there because of the prices. She states, “There’s a cultural shift and cost shift going on and San Francisco just doesn’t feel like a city I want to be in anymore. This is kind of the feeling people in the Mission district are feeling as well. Keep in mind that the Mission district is known for being a community of low income and the majority of people living there were Latinos. According to City-Data, in 2011 the median rent in the Mission was on the lower end $1,000 and the median household income was around $72,000. Now in 2015, the median house or condo in the Mission district is from $386,000-$923,000. (From 16th-26th and Valencia to Folsom street) The household income now ranges from $44,000-$105,000. The median rent is still around the same ranging from low $1,000-$1,500. There’s a lot one can say from these numbers. For example, the fact that the household income has increased means that there are more people moving in that have better high paying jobs than those who used to live here. For example, those who work in tech corporations or those who used to be considered of middle class, but since the San Francisco economy is rising, the Mission, which is supposed to be for those of low income, is now becoming there new homes. The median house or condo prices are extremely high, and since the Mission has a higher percentage of poverty, that means those who lived there won’t be able to afford it and will be forced out. Those who can afford it, are the ones making money or coming from middle to high socio economic class.
What is happening in the Mission district, is that old houses or apartments are being torn down or renewed forcing people out, and new businesses and condos are being built. This is allowing for large corporations to build offices to buy space in the neighborhood and only have those who don’t live in poverty aka those of middle and high social class to be able to afford the homes in the Mission and afford being able to shop, eat, and take advantage of the new expenses in the Mission. High tech corporations have the money and the power to buy buildings and take over; they are behind the houses and businesses being torn down or bought out. No owner or city is going to say no to thousands and millions of dollars. This is a low-income neighborhood with minorities and old structure around it; it is not cared of or respected enough if it was a rich, updated, clean community. They don’t care that poor people are complaining about not being able to afford or stay in the place that they have lived in for years because they can’t afford it. People who are losing there homes or businesses are not being reimbursed because they either rent a home or have a business that wasn’t successful, therefor they just buy them out and those who lived or owned there before don’t get anything out of it. All they get is having to relocate. Taking away these natives, and taking away how the Mission district used to be is taking away culture, and ruining people’s lives.
